Ribbon Cutting & Dedication-Camp Dallas Historical Marker
In 1925, Dallas ROTC students came to Camp Dallas for their summer training in Mineral Wells. Previous to this they had gone to another town.
Camp Dallas was located between the area where old Camp Wolters high school property and Fort Wolters were located. Presently, Pet Western Animal Hospital owns some of the land that was used as Camp Dallas. This property was given to Dallas ISD in 1926. in 1927, it was known as the largest ROTC camp in the US, housing over 400 boys but was topped in 1943 when over 800 boys attended. This camp also added to our economy as many parents came to stay and eat in Mineral Wells during this time.
From that time on to 1965, students from Dallas and sometimes other neighboring schools came to do their summer work. It was stopped briefly then started again in 1971 to 1973 but not to the extent it had been in the past.
Several students became soldiers and officers for our military. Many became civilian leaders. We will dedicate a City Historical Marker to Camp Dallas and those who came here.
